I bought two coaches club PSLs. I am 32 and watched the Giants on TV with having only went to the game 4 or 5 times. I was on the waiting list for 15 years and was told last year that i was still 10-20 years away. I could not buy "good" tickets online even if i was willing to pay 2-3 times face value for a good game. I do not think it is unfair for the Giants to "monetize" their wait list and the heavy demand for their tickets. Giant season ticket holders should be thank ful they got to go to the game all of these years. I have been very jealous for a very long time. These boycotts will last two or three games then go away. I even suspect the Giants will make the PSLs a better deal before they close next year. I WOULD SAY TO GIANT CURRENT SEASON TICKET HOLDERS MAKE THE SAME SMART DECISION THAT YOUR PARENTS MADE and BUY a few PSLs
For the coaches club these seats were formerly only reserved for the ultra wealth 5mil plus net worths, and corporations. Because of the credit/real estate crisis along with the problems with banks, investment firms, and insurance companies (amoung other businesses) these are not selling. What would these PSLs go for three years ago? I would bet 50K each without the benefit of a new statium with easier access to NYC. Of course these are different times and they could trade down, but i think PSLs are better investments then many things out there right now including most real estate.
Lets run some numbers 22 mil plus people live with-in one hour of Giant Statium. Lets say half of them are of the age to purchase tickets 21-60 (no disrespect to our older readers), then one third of these are Giant fans who have the means to buy tickets. That leaves us at roughly 4 mil people. Lets cut that in half again to include only those people who are big enough fans to wish to go to at least one game a season. That leaves us with 2mil people. There are 800,000 seats available a season. This means that the roughly 2mil hard core well to do Giant fans can only go to the game .4 times a year. Now this does not include if people bring a wife, child, friend, client or fan of the other team. This also does not include that some people will want to go more then to one game a year. I can can go on and on. These thoughts are exagerated in my mind if we are talking top 1000-2000 seats in the statium. You are talking a limited supply that can never grow. The main risk i see is if the Giants raise ticket prices excessively or if the NFL grows its season.
I am NOT buying my PSL for an investment, in fact i will back out of them if the economy is gets much worse or if I do not have one of the top 500-1000 seats in the statium. However I do not think it is unreasonable for these to trade up. These can trade down, but with inflation and the next time the giants are good 10-15 years from now, these could be up 100-500 percent which is better then most investments. This is not much different an investment then your house except there is much more limited supply. There is an upfront cost, yearly expenses like taxes, mortgage interest, upkeep etc.
